Erasmus Mundus Fellowships

Categories

  • Category A fellowships can be awarded to doctoral candidates selected by EMJD consortia, who come from a “Third country” (other than Member States of the European Union, an EEA-EFTA State, Turkey, the Western Balkan countries or Switzerland) and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries. The only exception to this rule applies to Third-Country doctoral candidates who have previously received an Erasmus Mundus masters scholarship in order to follow an EMMC.

  • Category B fellowships can be awarded to any doctoral candidate selected by EMJD consortia and who do not fulfil the Category A criteria defined above.

Management

COMILLAS will draft students’ PhD contracts and allocate the funds as specified in the individual fellowship table set out in the programme guide for Category A and Category B research contracts:

  • Fixed contribution for travel, relocation and any other costs: Category A fellowship: €7500. Category B €3000. To be allocated to students and paid in equal instalments, depending on the student’s pathway during the 3 years of the EM doctoral-fellowship.
  • Fixed living allowance (gross): €2 800 per month, during 36 months - 3 years funded by the EM doctoral-fellowship for both Categories. Students will be parties to an employment contract, which according to Spanish labour law, includes social security, health care insurance, tax and the student’s net monthly allowance; student insurance will also be deducted from this amount.

Where students also need financing for their fourth year of SETS studies, the universities will draw on their own funds and on funding from private companies and other sponsors to ensure students complete their doctorate. Each HEI may make fourth year arrangements in accordance with its usual practice for doctoral students.

Doctoral agreement

Subsequently, the doctoral student and the coordinating institution will sign a doctoral candidate agreement that will transparently reflect the rights and duties of both contracting parties, and in particular:

  • For the student: research freedom, recognising particular research circumstances and supervisory or operational constraints; ethical principles, professional responsibility and attitude; contractual and legal obligations; accountability towards the HEIs, other associated partners, the European Commission, and society as a whole; best practices in research; dissemination and exploitation of results (including co-authorships and co-ownership); public interest and concerns; relation with supervisors, tutors and other SETS management bodies; and finally continuing professional development.

  • For the HEIs and the coordinating institution: students will be accorded junior researcher status, subject to an employment contract and to the rights and duties established by European and national legislations. The HEIs will adopt the principles of non-discrimination; provide an adequate research environment and resources; productive and adaptable working conditions as required for different research needs and situations; stability of employment during and after the EC fellowship period; fair and attractive salaries and other benefits; gender equity;  career development framework; support for productive mobility (of the essence of the SETS programme itself); continuous development and training culture and environment; appropriate protection of intellectual property rights and copyrights, including co-authorship and co-property; effective and close supervision, tutoring and coaching mechanisms; participation in specific teaching activities (never taking precedence over research targets); transparent and fair joint evaluation mechanisms; effective management of complaints and appeals and participation in decision-making bodies (students will participate in the SETS Supervision Board).
