3. Biography:

Álvaro was born in Madrid in 1983. He obtained his Industrial Engineering Degree (MSc.) from Universidad Pontificia Comillas (ICAI), Madrid, Spain, in 2006. He also graduated as an engineer (MSc.) from the École d'Ingénieurs ICAM Toulouse, France, in 2007, after studying there and doing an internship at Airbus Central Entity.

In 2009 he completed his pre-PhD Masters at Instituto de Investigación Tecnológica, where his research was focused on generation capacity investment analysis in liberalized electricity markets, electricity markets modeling, renewable support schemes and capacity mechanisms. This research was financed by Endesa, and supervised by Professor Efraim Centeno and Professor Julián Barquín. The main outcome was the paper “Long Term Issues to be Addressed by Regulators in Liberalised Electricity Systems: Generation Adequacy and Indicative Planning. Justification, Available Mechanisms, and a Simulation Study on Some Concrete Policies”.

Since 2009, he has been working on his PhD Thesis within the BP Chair on Energy and Sustainability, supervised by Professor Ignacio Pérez-Arriaga and Professor Pedro Linares, and financed by BP Spain. The thesis’s title is “Evaluation and Design of Sustainable Energy Policies: an Application to the Case of Spain”. The main research lines are energy sustainability, energy policy, energy-economic-environmental modeling, sustainability indicators, and energy economics. The ultimate goal is proposing a methodology for assessing sustainable energy policies (those aiming at making the energy system more sustainable in its economic and environmental perspectives) and applying it to the specific case of Spain. Within his PhD, he did a research visit to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during 2012.

Outside his PhD research, but related to energy, he is also interested in aid for development (member of the Board of the Spanish NGO Energía Sin Fronteras) and in big music events as a way to communicate sustainability ideas to society (Co-Founder and Director for Energy at EarthBeatz S.L.). Within Energía Sin Fronteras, he has mainly worked in the development of regulatory frameworks for promoting the participation of private entities (such as entrepreneurs, local cooperatives, utilities, etc) in the electrification of isolated rural communities in developing countries, where the national electricity grids do not reach. He has also trained local populations on the use and maintenance of photovoltaic systems. At the moment he is in charge of tasks concerning Institutional Relations with other Organisations.
